Character Name: Makima
Series: Chainsaw Man
Age: Unknown, but this incarnation seems to be in her mid twenties
From When?: After her proper death at Denji's hands

Inmate/Warden: INMATE. No question. She's absolutely awful, literally building a man's life up for him to make him happy enough that she'd be able to break him. She uses, abuses, murders, manipulates, and enslaves people without even a hitch of guilt and while her 'goals' could be seen to potentially be positive, they are all ultimately in the pursuit of her own selfish ends.

Arrival: 100% against her will. She never would have thought that she would need or could have redemption, and she'd never admit to the wish that's in her heart.

Abilities/Powers: Canon Abilities are here and here. As an inmate, she will be restricted to her exceptional sense of smell, being stronger/faster/hardier than the average human somewhat, and the ability to control/work through roughly 10 rats/2 dogs or cats worth of 'lesser' creatures, with no ability to travel via them. I would also like to keep that she can heal/recover strength through consuming blood, an ability all devils in her world have.

Personality:

In the world that Makima comes from, there are 'devils' that are the anthropomorphication of the fear humanity has for a thing. So there's a sword devil for the fear people have of being harmed or killed by swords, the doll devil for the fear people have of creepy dolls, a shark devil, etc. etc. Makima? Is the Control Devil, one of the oldest and most powerful to ever venture out of Hell.

Not that everyone knows this. To most people, she's the leader of the Devil Hunters working for the Public Safety branch of the Japanese government, and people assume that she has a contract with a pretty powerful devil to hold that position and be able to do the things she does. But those in the know? Are terrified of her; most of the world's governments have already submitted to her will, the US being the only one who won't, and the Japanese government has actually set up a deal with her where damage done to her is transferred to Japanese citizens instead. Hence why she's died 33 times or so without much trouble.

Outwardly, she presents as a sweet, kind, appealing young woman. She can be flirty and cute and even outright sexual if it'll get the right response. The face she shows is a benevolent one, which makes sense given the creator’s mention that her name boils down to ‘Mama’. She wants people to look to her, to need her, to be connected to her. While all of this is for terrible reasons, she also actually enjoys it; she likes gentle control, being a ‘goddess’ to someone, being the object of their love and devotion. To people who aren’t in the know, she seems like an incredibly capable, caring, and reasonable boss to the Devil Hunters under her command; she's even saved many of their lives! Press F to Doubt. It’s just that that’s only one side.

Because the fact of the matter is that she, unsurprisingly, is a control freak. She can’t stand the idea of power she doesn’t have control over or situations she can’t control and that means she’ll do whatever she has to do to get it or destroy whatever stands in her way. The very idea of doing otherwise is anathema. The idea of giving up control or doing things in any other way but the way that means she dominates the situation is not even something that’s entered her mind, not really. Even her love for the chainsaw devil is something that she feels the need to control the form of: either she’ll dominate him and take his power and use it to do what she wants or she’ll die to his blade and cease to be; no other options exist for her and when other options do present themselves, she literally starts getting yandere about it to him.

And she’ll do anything for that control, be anything, act however she needs to or offer whatever she needs to; she’s incredibly manipulative, willing to destroy anything and everything, play any trick or angle, and she knows how to find people’s weak points, the things that make them tick, the pieces of their past or their heart where they’re vulnerable and want more than anything else to give up control, to give up. She can be flirty or stern or forgiving and it all has to do with what will let her manipulate the people in front of her.

Though she does have a personality: she’s elitist and condescending, basing so very much on competence and power and ‘quality’ to the point where one of the evils she wants to get rid of are ‘bad movies’. She’s more than happy to lord herself and her power over people if she’s past the ‘sweet mommy’ stage with them and they’re getting hostile. She isn’t very emotive, but there’s definitely a smug satisfaction she gets when destroying or consuming her enemies and taking their power for her own. More than anything, she’s cold, almost sterile at times. Her expressions are always mild and she barely reacts to anything. Part of her persona is just that she's expected to be a no-nonsense, ruthless, emotionless and tactical-minded leader for the Public Safety Devil Hunting division as part of her arrangement with the Japanese government. In some ways, she’s like the demonic version of an AI that decided the only way to save humanity was to destroy humanity for it’s own good.

And that’s the thing: she sees herself as a savior, and part of the act that she sells to other people is an act that she believes herself. But the fact of the matter is that it’s not true; she hardly sees ‘people’ at all, just objects and tools and ways to manipulate things towards her goals. Humanity isn’t real to her on a personal level. It’s how she is eventually defeated as Denji realizes that she never really saw ‘him’, she just saw Chainsaw Man/Poochita within him and focused on that. And it’s also why she’s ‘trapped’ and unable to have relationships, though she doesn’t realize that.

Barge Reactions: She's going to play sweet and kind and manipulative to the Barge denizens in general; she's not the type to go into more overt behavior until she feels like she has people right where she wants them and she prefers to keep her control 'gentle' when she can as it fits her own personal narrative. To the Barge itself, she's going to be fascinated and curious and want to try and do and meet people to see how they react to her. Given some of the weird existential shit in her canon, she's not really going to balk at much. Reality shifts are somewhat normal depending on what devil is on the scene for her world. Being able to die and not die is actually very normal to her, though she's going to be annoyed about the death toll, and she's definitely going to be the kind of inmate who stirs shit up with ideological questions and tries to cause trouble.

Path to Redemption: Makima's truest wish is to be able to stand on equal footing with people and to have relationships and connections that aren't based around control and fear... but she refuses to see that this is a choice of hers, to be driven by power, to see people as 'lesser' and that by judging people by power instead of the full scope of who they are, she's the one cutting herself off. Her view of humans is as such: "In the same way that humans are so fond of dogs. They're loyal, easily handled, clever and stupid. Just watching them is fun. And also, they love me." She is the one creating this situation and she needs to understand that she doesn't have to 'fix' the world for her to be able to deal with people on equal footing or have a familial relationships: she has to stop looking down on people and see them as her equals, care about them as if they matter, and stop being disdainful of them. She also has to come to understand that the way she deals with people, as tools and play things and folowers to worship her as a goddess, is not right. Nor is it right to commit horrendous acts for the supposed 'greater good' that, really, is just her own selfish desires.

History: A good run down is here.

Sample Journal Entry:
I never thought the change devil would be stronger than me.

At least for now. I’m learning more every day about him, him and his contract holder, though the Admiral refuses to meet with me. Apparently, this is his standard answer to all inmates and even to wardens. I understand why. But I don’t like it. I think it’s bad management technique. Shouldn’t you be available to your employees?

But he didn’t ask me. Which, I think, is very rude.
